Solar cells need direct, unobstructed sunlight to convert energy efficiently. A layer of dust, pollen, or bird droppings creates a physical barrier that scatters and blocks light before it reaches the cell — an effect installers call soiling loss.
The impact depends on how dirty the panels are and how the grime is distributed. A light, even dust layer might shave off a few percent of output. Concentrated buildup, like bird droppings or streaks from hard water, can create hot spots that reduce performance more than the coverage area suggests, and in some cases stress the affected cells.
